Preaching Series - Love Thy Neighbour
In Mark 12:28 – 31, when asked which is the greatest of the commandments, Jesus replied:
29 “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” (NIV)
Join us over the next few weeks as we explore what Jesus meant when He said that we should love our neighbours. We will look at who our neighbours actually are and practical ways in which God has called us to love them.
We can learn to love our neighbour by looking to Jesus as our example…
When we love God with every fiber of our being our new inclination is to show the same measure of love towards others that He has shown to us. When we are aware of how much grace and mercy God has extended to us through the death and resurrection of His son Jesus Christ, we are then called to show the same to others.
We demonstrate God’s love to our neighbours by extending forgiveness to those who have wrongs us just as God has forgiven us for our sins against Him.
It isn’t just for our neighbour’s sake that Jesus tells us to love our neighbours and to forgive our enemies, but for ours as well.
Jesus showed us the ultimate act of mercy when He died on the cross for us when we most definitely did not deserve it. This is the same measure of mercy we are called to show to our neighbours ; loving even if and when they don’t deserve it.
God has created us to be a part of a community that dwells in peace with one another. Jesus is the perfect example to follow when it comes to loving.
